When you are both the Prisoner, and the Warden.
THE CAGE AND THE KEY
A Screenplay by Dehemi Fabio
LOGLINE: In a surreal prison of the soul, a young man who holds the keys to every cage must choose between the warmth of a risky connection and the chilling safety of his own self-imposed isolation after a profound betrayal.
CHARACTERS
DAEMON (20s) - Guarded and observant, hides a deep longing behind a mask of sarcasm. JULES (20s) - Ethereal, perceptive, and emotionally direct. A symbol of beautiful, dangerous vulnerability. THE OTHER GIRL (20s) - Quiet, genuine. A second chance. THE WARDEN (50s) - A neutral, weary arbiter of the prison's strange rules, with an underlying philosophical edge.
ACT I – INTRO
INT. CAGE COMPLEX - DAY
A vast, cavernous space. The air is grey and still. A strange, multi-leveled structure of steel cages dominates the view, stacked and scattered like a brutalist beehive. It feels less like a cruel prison and more like a place of quiet, disciplinary limbo.
In a cage high above the others, DAEMON sits, looking down. He has a clear view of everyone. He is detached, an observer.
Below and across from him, other cages hold boys and girls, all in their own worlds of silence.
His eyes fix on a cage opposite. Inside are two girls. One of them is JULES. She braids the hair of the OTHER GIRL, her movements fluid and graceful.
Daemon leans against the bars of his cage, projecting his voice.
Jules stops her work. She looks up, her gaze cutting through the distance and straight to Daemon. She isn't angry. She looks... interested. Pitying, even.
Daemon scoffs, but his bravado is thin.
The words hang in the air. The ambient noise of the complex seems to fade. Daemon is caught, his mask stripped away. He can't look away from her.
A long beat. The world is silent. Daemon finally asks the only question that matters.
ACT II – CONNECTION & BETRAYAL
INT. CAGE COMPLEX - CONTINUOUS
Daemon's breath catches. He is in love with her, though he's never said it, never shown it. He composes himself, a flicker of fear in his eyes.
Her face is etched with real emotion. Everything falls silent. Daemon stares at her, a long, quiet moment passing between them.
Daemon descends the ladder of his cage, his movements deliberate. He reaches the ground level.
He walks to his cage door. It clicks and swings open. He looks across at Jules' cage. Her door does the same. An unspoken invitation.
He crosses the space between them. He stops at her threshold, reaches out, and his fingers brush her cheek. The touch is electric.
He steps inside her cage.
He pulls her close. They kiss. It's not frantic, but deep and profound. A moment of pure, unguarded connection. The rest of the world ceases to exist.
She pulls back slightly, her eyes searching his. She whispers something warm, inaudible to us, a secret just for him. He closes his eyes, savoring it.
Then, her expression shifts. The warmth recedes. A cold, calculating glint in her eye.
She pulls away from him completely. Before he can process it, she turns and SPRINTS out of the open cage door, making a break for the vast, grey expanse beyond the complex.
Daemon stands, stunned. Betrayal hits him like a physical blow.
She doesn't answer. She just keeps running.
A raw anger surges through him. A thought, cold and clear: If she's not with me, she can't be free.
He takes off after her. He's faster. He closes the distance, tackles her, and they fall to the hard floor. He holds her down. She struggles beneath him.
Suddenly, a deafening ALARM blares through the complex. Red lights flash.
The WARDEN appears, walking calmly towards them. He looks down at the scene, his face impassive. He gives a slight nod. Two unseen GUARDS emerge, lift the struggling Jules, and drag her towards a new, smaller, more secure cage.
The Warden looks at Daemon, still on the ground.
Daemon looks at Jules, being forced into the small, dark cage. He shakes his head, a resolute refusal.
ACT III – THE OTHER GIRL & THE KEYS
INT. CAGE COMPLEX - LATER
The alarms are silent. The complex is back to its quiet state.
Daemon wanders, aimless. He finds himself back at Jules' old cage. The OTHER GIRL is there, alone now. She looks at him with kind, sad eyes. She offers a small, genuine smile.
She gestures to the empty space beside her. Her offer is genuine, a quiet warmth. Daemon looks at her, then at the empty space. He sees a trap. He can't trust it. He can't trust her. His jaw tightens, a flicker of pain in his eyes.
He shakes his head and walks away, leaving her alone.
He wanders into a new section of the complex. The cages are still here, but the space has transformed. It's now like a surreal, empty supermarket. The shelves are stocked with chocolates, biscuits, sodas, all his favorite things. An eerie, silent abundance.
He picks up a chocolate bar, unwraps it, and takes a bite. It tastes like nothing. He feels nothing. An overwhelming emptiness.
He stops. His hand goes to his pocket. He pulls out a large, heavy ring of KEYS. He stares at them. He's had them all along. The realization washes over him, a cold, bitter wave.
The Warden appears beside him, a knowing, almost sympathetic look on his face.
The Warden turns and walks away, leaving Daemon alone with his keys and his choices in the silent, surreal supermarket.
ACT IV – FINAL CHOICE
INT. CAGE COMPLEX - NIGHT
Daemon stands before two cages. One is large, spacious, and empty, almost inviting in its openness. The other is small, compact, almost claustrophobic. He takes a step towards the large one, a flicker of hope in his eyes. His hand brushes the cool metal of its doorframe. He almost walks in.
A hallucination: JULES appears, shimmering, in the large cage, her hand extended.
Daemon flinches, the image dissolving. He remembers the Warden's voice, a soft echo in his mind: "Look closer."
He peers into the smaller cage. Inside, it's stocked with everything from the supermarket shelves: ice cream, cold drinks, chocolates. A small fridge HUMS, emanating a low, steady sound. It's a cage of ultimate, solitary comfort.
He hesitates, his gaze lingering on the large, empty cage. A deep sigh escapes him, heavy with resignation. He glances at the keys in his hand, then back at the smaller, cold cage. A decision, heavy with a sense of inevitability, settles over him.
Daemon uses one of his keys to unlock the small cage. The click of the lock is loud in the silence. He steps inside.
He closes the door behind him. It doesn't lock. He could leave at any time.
He sits down on the small cot inside the cage. He opens the fridge. A blast of FRIDGE-COLD air hits him. He shivers, a deep, internal chill.
He takes out a tub of ice cream and a spoon. He takes a slow, deliberate bite.
He stares into the middle distance, his expression blank, lost in thought. The cold air from the fridge envelops him. The door to his cage remains unlocked, slightly ajar. He never leaves.
FADE TO BLACK.
